Statement by the Japan National Press Club on the kidnapping of a Japanese reporter and a civilian

Japan National Press Club strongly protests against the Islamic State Extremist Group's threat to kill two Japanese citizens, one of them, a reporter taken as hostage while on work, unless the ransom is paid by the Japanese government.

We call for their unharmed and immediate release.

We would not tolerate heinous acts for demanding the ransom by using human lives as a shield.

Our Club strives for maintaining the integrity of journalism and the principle of the freedom of the press.

This incident intimidates by force the freedom of the press, a pillar of democracy, and obstructs free news-gathering activities.
