Statement by the Asia-Pacific Association of Press Clubs

The Asia-Pacific Association of Press Clubs expresses its shock at the terrorist attack on the office of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

We express our solidarity and condolences with the bereaved families who lost their family members.

The murderers and their extremist ideology are a threat to press freedom everywhere.

A free press is essential to a free and civilised society.

The Asia-Pacific Association of Press Clubs calls upon the French Government to bring the assailants to justice, and urges spiritual and religious leaders to promote among their followers respect for the freedom of the press and tolerance towards other views.

We call upon governments and authorities around the world to provide proper protection to journalists and media personnel in the line of duty.
